The Classroom Management Section

The Classroom Management section of your Portfolio should emphasize and demonstrate the following, many of which are articulated in the standards of practice of different jurisdictions, including the Ontario College of Teachers' Standards of Practice:

  • Your ability to create and maintain a positive learning environment, accommodating differences in students and respecting their diversity.
  • Your care and commitment to students, helping them build self-esteem and learn to self-monitor and control their own actions.
  • Your reinforcement of the rights and responsibilities of all persons in the classroom.
  • Your knowledge of classroom organization and routines that support a positive learning environment.

We recommend the following entries to this section:

  • A Belief Statement, which includes reference to positive learning environments, student diversity, rights, responsibilities, respect, and theories or models that have special appeal to you.
  • A table of Classroom Management Approaches which Appeal to You, noting the theories or models underpinning those approaches, specific contexts of application and your comment or reflection on each approach.
  • A table of Classroom Management Approaches which You have Used, noting the same aspects as indicated above.

The Build Your Portfolio assistant will give you specific tables and charts that you can use to keep this compacted.
